We are an open crowdsourcing project, with the goal to preserve Hylkysaari island in Helsinki, Finland as a recreational area and make it an easy to access center for wellbeing. We made a preliminary offer of several million euros to the state, but so far the state is continuing negotiations with those who have offered more money. The buyer is likely to be chosen by early 2021. We wish Hylkysaari a good future. Perhaps our concept will live on somewhere else…
Still in the 60's, maritime pilots who guided ships safely to the harbor lived with their families in the magnificent landmark of Hylkysaari, the maritime pilot barrack. The history of the island is also represented by the stunning 19th century Villa Ida, gorgeous gas factory and numerous boat sheds. This island, situated next to Korkeasaari Island, has been deserted for 13 years despite having a magnificent location in Helsinki, the capital of Finland.
Hylkysaari is valuable cultural heritage. It has potential to be a new landmark in the maritime Helsinki; an attractive destination for both Helsinki residents and tourists. Hylkysaari can be a ‘pilot’ for contemporary challenges; a communal, meaningful center that is close to nature. An open oasis in the middle of the city, yet in its own peacefulness.
Join us in lighting the lighthouse lanterns again!
