Who we are

Hylkysaari Collective is an association founded on 28 September 2020. The purpose of the association is to promote holistic wellbeing in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Amongst us are doctors and other healthcare professionals, architects, entrepreneurs, startup actives, a founder of a public company and a professor, numerous unique people. We are united by the dream of Hylkysaari Island as a center of community and a symbol of wellbeing. Our activities are open to everyone. The heart of the conversation is on Slack,where everyone interested in taking part in developing the project is welcome to join.

Ville Salmensuu, president of the board of the association, is an attending doctor in emergency medicine, MSc (Tech) and a student of psychology. Ville’s curiosity has driven him to many schools, but in the past undertaking big dreams has been limited by fear and insecurity. For Ville, Hylkysaari Collective is an intentional transcendence of oneself, meaning living with fears and insecurities. This is aided by a daily meditation practice and leisurely, in-depth encounters with fellow human beings.
Ilona Mooney
Ilona Mooney
Ilona Mooney is vice president of the board of the association, MSc (Eng) and a technology entrepreneur. Ilona has lived in six different countries, worked at the UN, as a technology consultant and in startups. She has launched the Impact program, directed at solving global challenges, at the Slush startup event. Ilona is inspired by big dreams and actions for a more sustainable society.
Pekka Nikander
Pekka Nikander
The second vice president and treasurer, Prof. Pekka Nikander, works at Aalto University, where his research group focuses on applying Distributed Ledger Technologies to the Internet of Things and especially to structurally renewing the markets of digital non-rival and anti-rival goods. Prof. Nikander is a former serial entrepreneur, having founded one listed and four other startup companies. He has been ranked as the 25th most influential computer scientist in Finland. He always works with passion, aiming towards international large scale impact.

Johannes Kärkkäinen
Johannes Kärkkäinen
Johannes Kärkkäinen, MD, specializes in acute medicine and works as a medical entrepreneur. The themes of producing health benefits and wellbeing fascinate him. Johannes hopes that Hylkysaari would be a place for diverse wellbeing, art and culture and sustainable living.
Pia Nikander
Pia Nikander
Pia Nikander, MSc (Nutrition), is a licensed nutritionist who works as chief clinical nutritionist at Helsinki University Hospital. Pia has extensive experience in nutrition specialist positions in healthcare, teaching positions and as an entrepreneur. In the Hylkysaari project Pia is addressed by the opportunity to together build a path towards a “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being” (WHO’s definition of health) as part of everyday life and being, growing along the way and transcending one's own boundaries.
Kauri Salonen
Kauri Salonen
Kauri Salonen is a creative, futuristic innovator, marketer and promoter focused on saving the world, and a multi-talent in digital technologies in general. Kauri is passionate about the design and usability of high quality products, and he’s inspired about building interactive experiences co-created by humans and machines. Kauri has extensive contact networks, he gets excited easily and is always ready for anything.
Petri Saarelainen
Petri Saarelainen
Architect Petri Saarelainen is passionate about the built environment and works as a project manager for demanding construction projects. Working in design offices has taught him that a good environment doesn’t happen by itself. He is at his best in multi-stakeholder partnership projects, developing concepts and removing obstacles in the way of their realization.

In Hylkysaari, he sees rare opportunities to create a meaningful public place in the heart of Helsinki, which combines marine nature, holistic wellbeing and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Viivi Viertokangas
Viivi Viertokangas
Viivi Viertokangas has studied restoration, i.e. the renovation of old furniture and interiors. Viivi loves to reflect on the big questions of life. She is especially interested in holistic wellbeing and the potential of the mind. Her dream is to get to study medicine and specialize in psychiatry, combining contemplative science and psychotherapy.

Juuso Kangas
Juuso Kangas
Juuso Kangas, MSc (Eng) in Industrial Engineering and Management, is interested in self- and community development. Juuso has experience in property management, as well as concept design and development. Nowadays Juuso coaches companies and spars with entrepreneurs on clarifying their purpose. He also contributes to the Oxygen2050 community, where he helps bring together companies, investors and change makers who want the world to be a better place through entrepreneurship. In the Hylkysaari Collective project, Juuso is interested in the opportunity to increase holistic wellbeing and meet other people in a natural environment, as well as the opportunity for co-creation.
Julius Kekoni
Julius Kekoni
Architect Julius Kekoni does not want to be compartmentalized in the “house camp”, but to do design on a broad scale. Interdisciplinary and artistic projects with experts from many different fields produce the most beautiful result. Julius gets great satisfaction from creating functional entities. It doesn’t matter if it’s the design of a concert hall, assembling a bicycle, arranging a theatre performance, or coding an application. Creating internal order makes the world more beautiful.

Hanna Nikkola
Hanna Nikkola is a nurse with a specialization in psychiatry and a part-time psychology student in open university. She is interested in holistic wellbeing, as well as healing trauma and emotional locks by various methods. She has recently started studying psychophysical Rosen therapy. Close to her heart are also yoga, mindfulness and suggestion therapy.

Kosti Rytkönen, MSc (Eng), is a serial entrepreneur in the game industry. His goal has been to bring different people to work on a common goal, to achieve outcomes that require diverse skills.
Vilho Ahola
Vilho Ahola
The association's secretary Vilho Ahola, MD, is a pioneer of modern holistic medicine in Finland. His interest in the body-mind has led him to study its many aspects quite extensively. As a practitioner on the spiritual path, he embarked on the path of the Buddha 10 years ago and has been practicing Zen meditation ever since. Now, in the last year, Vilho has transitioned into a classical non-dualistic shaiva tantra.
